I used to be a professional water skier. When skiing in a lineup, it is important to keep looking straight ahead to keep clean lines and avoid running into someone else.
Have you ever driven with someone who turns their head to talk WHILE driving? It can be scary!
I know a lot of business owners who do the same thing. They look left and right to see what everyone else is doing. And just like driving, checking your competition makes for a scary situation.
Here are a few pointers to keep you from comparing yourself to others:
1.) Stop and take stock. Can you really be behind in business? It’s not a race, and no two entrepreneurs start at the same point. Take a look at your goals, your process, and the action you’ve taken so far. How can you streamline those to move forward?
2.) Be grateful. You can’t feel competitive, angry, or envious if you’re in a state of gratefulness. This might sound silly, but it really does work. Grab a sheet of paper and set a timer for 5 minutes. Write down everything in your business you’re grateful for. Then, get to work! You can’t improve your business if you’re not constantly implementing strategies that work!
3.) Reset. When in doubt, give yourself a reminder that no one is like you. No one else has those fingerprints. No one has your exact skillset or talent. There is no competition, there is only you. Use that energy to create something incredible!
Stop seeking approval from behind you or sneaking a peek to see who’s ahead. It doesn’t matter. As long as you keep moving forward, you’ll reach your destination. Just let the boat pull you.
